I have tried using apt-get, but that gave broken packages, so I hoped
to be able to enforce installing using dpkg. Using apt-get will give a
broken packages error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
slimserver: Depends: 
libmysqlclient14-dev but it is not installable or
libmysqlclient15-dev but it is not going to be
installed
E: Broken packages
