I dont know if this is relevant, but my Debian Etch seems to rotate the log also daily:
slim:~# tail -150 /var/log/messages Sep 18 06:25:13 slim syslogd 1.4.1#18: restart. [...] Sep 19 06:25:46 slim syslogd 1.4.1#18: restart.
