servies, I understand the reasons why it might be desirable to build one's own kernel. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. However, the OP is new to linux and his primary objective is to have a platform on which to run slimserver (unless I've missed something). Building a kernel is something that, for most people, is just not necessary these days. Life's just too short.
