My thoughts exactly, you may also want to raise your "swappiness" to
lower the number of read/writes to the disk.  I've had huge gains by
tweaking this file, reducing disk i/o.  Change to something like 60
(not sure what your default is, but that's what I changed mine to) in
/proc/sys/vm/swappiness.
