okay, this should not be a filesystem permissions issue since
SoftSqueeze plays.

Is this SoftSqueeze being run on the server or on another machine?

If it does not run (or you don't know if it does) on another machine,
then your problem would most likely be firewalling of some sort.  Your
server would not be allowing connections from other machines, but still
allowing localhost connections.

I dunno gentoo, but I would start looking at firewall configuration.
