I'm trying to do the same thing.  I have just installed ubuntu 7.1 and
have an NTFS drive that was used as a USB drive (within a casing) on a
previous computer.  I have removed the drive from the casing, installed
it in the Ubuntu machine, and am getting the same error messages you
were getting (fdisk results are the same as well).

As you suggested, I added the remap command to the kernel line.  In
this case, it is hdb (sdb in ubuntu).  The command I added was 

sdb=remap

at the end of the line in menu.lst.  Still not working.  Any ideas?
