egd - I was not aware that Gnome Commander had issues as such, but I
have not been using it to the degree that you have tried in the past. I
wonder if using the older Midnight Commander in a terminal window would
work more reliably for you.

I have been running a 750 GB NTFS-formatted SeaGate FreeAgent USB drive
with my Ubuntu 7.10 laptop for at least three months now, and it has
been working very well for me (after addressing the spin-down behavior
of this drive.) It probably would have been preferable to reformat it
as ext3, but ... (shrug) ... it seems to just work, so I didn't
bother.
