I've now got SC7.0 running under a minimal Debian install. It appears to be working correctly, but rather slowly. The test machine is a 500MHz AMD K6-2 with 448MB RAM, and the test music library comprises just 4 albums of FLAC files. In comparison, I also have SC7.0 running under Windows 2000 on a 533MHz mini-ITX with 512MB RAM (with a music library of about 1150 albums). I was expecting the Debian machine to be considerably faster, but if anything it seems a bit slower than the Windows machine, despite the fact that the Debian box is running only SC7.0, whereas the Windows machine is also running an Oracle database, VPOP3 server and Xitami web server.
So the question is: what tools are available in Debian to try and find out where any bottlenecks might be? I ran "top", and the CPU usage doesn't seem too bad. I notice that nearly all the memory is in use, but my understanding is that unlike Windows - where high memory use is a bad sign - one should expect Linux to use all the available RAM in order to maximise its performance. So how can I tell whether it's needing to do lots of swapping? (Note: this is the same machine that used to run Slimserver 6.1 under FreeBSD, and that was pretty damn quick). I don't want to go to the trouble of moving from Windows to Linux unless I can get significantly better performance while still using a low power machine (eg. a 1GHz mini-ITX with 1GB RAM). At the moment the Windows machine works fine for day-to-day listening, but it's dog-slow when scanning the music library or serving up Squeezecenter web pages (hence my interest in moving to Linux).
