Not AFAIK. Presumably you get the same mysql error when doing '/etc/init.d/mysql start' (or restart) ? Anything useful in /var/log/mysql*. Also you could uncomment the line log = /var/log/mysql/mysql.log in /etc/mysql/my.cnf to get more debugging info. Did you try rebooting? or killing existing mysql processes manually? Also what if you use 'aptitude' instead of 'apt-get' ?
