The original problem was not being able to connect to the database (according to the log). While running down that problem I removed slimserver and reinstalled but that didn't work either. I removed slimserver entirely again and tried installing squeezecenter and that has failed as well for another reason. I guess I'll narrow it down as much as possible and repost when I can. Sigh. My 30 minute update has now lasted 4 hours with no end in sight.
