As your playing with linux did you start the firewall/ or is it on ?

I'm also a Linux noob so i find it easy to mess with firewall with
something called firestarter which you can get trough synaptic.

As I understand it port 9000 and 3483 should be open maybe 9090 as well
? ( a search can show up conflicting info, but 3483 & 9000 is always
suggested).

You can also allow all traffic from the SB, as i use fixed IP I simply
set the firewall to accept all connections from the SB's ip
