One thing that occurs to me for those with limited memory is to go into the BIOS and reduce any memory reserved for the display to a minimum. The name will vary with the BIOS - the on I'm looking at calls it "onchip vga frame buffer size".
Warning: Don't set it to "none". You lose the display!
