At customer service's request, I uninstalled SqueezeCenter 7.0, and installed 7.0.1 downloaded from http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/trunk/.
This resulted in SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0.1 - 18649 @ Thu Apr 10 08:34:52 PDT 2008 - Debian - EN - utf8 on my system. I then requested a "clear library and rescan everything" scan. About 32 minutes later the scanner came up for air, and at that point I was able to navigate through my library using Artist info.
