Have to agree here. I don't see pure Debian for linux newbies. I like it, but I've been using Unix since 85 and linux since the turn of the century. But I don't expect hand holding. I don't use Synaptic, I use a shell and apt-get. What I like about pure Debian is that it doesn't have all that user friendly stuff and excessive GUI tools to get in my way.
