The .deb didn't work. I think I also read that some where else on the
forum.
I've since tried the .tar.gz method and I do get problems with GD. I've
tried the build-perl-modules.pl but I seam to get errors and it doesn't
help.

It shows that I.m running perl v 5.008008.
The requirements are for v5.8.3 or higher.

Running $ perl --version
shows that I'm running v5.8.8 built for powerpc-linux-gnu-thread-multi

Any ideas?

Just a note. I've installed squeezecenter onto my desktop machine via
the slimdevices debian repository and it just worked. I wish the could
package squeezecenter for powerpc. Is there any way of asking them to
do this?
