IMO, the real problem is that all the RPM based distros name and
organize their packages differently.  Debian/Ubuntu/etc don't do that. 
The cleanest way to avoid these problems is to have different repos
(with slightly different SC RPMs) for Fedora/CentOS/Mandriva/SUSE/etc. 
I don't think anyone really wants to maintain that though.

I use Ubuntu for my desktop and CentOS on the server...
