I'm posting the solution, in case anyone else runs into the same thing. I had no playback volume because Ubuntu 8.04, using Pulseaudio, has two mixers, and the volume on both of them must be turned on and up to 100%. The command alsamixer brings up the default device, which is the virtual Pulseaudio device. The alsamixer -c 0 (where 0 is the number of my embedded sound card) brings up the hardware mixer. These values were muted. I turned everything on and raised each level to 100%.
As far as configuring Pulseaudio, my task took longer than it should have because the Pulseaudio web site only gives instructions using their graphical interfaces. There were no clear instructions for headless servers. Many users had posted their own suggestions in various forums, but most of these related to older versions of Pulseaudio and different Linux distributions. --Dean L. Surkin -- Dean L.
