You know, it does sound like it might be easier on linux to use something else. Adobe has a couple sample scripts at this page: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/socket_policy_files.html
Basically, all my plugin is doing is serving up a static XML file in response to any request on port 843, then closing the connection.
