Why not check out SlimNAS referenced in this thread - a SqueezeCenter
installation for FreeNAS?

Oh and your present hardware should be OK for a Linux-based SC.  I have
a 1.2 GHz Duron with Ubuntu and it ran SC 7.0 just fine.
