Thanks for all the ideas.  My original sources.list had slimdevices at
the top and didn't work.  Tried it again just to make sure, no go.  I
tried to install mysql 5.0 per the suggestion - here is the output.. 
Seems to keep wanting only the dev versions...

sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.0 mysql-client-5.0
libmysqlclient15-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
mysql-server-5.0 is already the newest version.
mysql-client-5.0 is already the newest version.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
