So why are you running it as root?

I have mine startup automatically by the usual init.d scripts.
All this was setup automatically by the .deb installer

Did you use that? or a tarball?

To manually start under Debian, get a root shell, do
/etc/init.d/squeezecenter start

or do the usual sudo thing
