AMD64 is a superset of the x86 architecture, and as several people have pointed out in this thread the .deb package and aptitude work fine on that platform. It is not as straightforward with other processors, like the PowerPC that the OP is using.
What you outline works perfectly for my Ubuntu (ie, debian-based) installations running on x86 processors, and not at all for my Debian installations running on ARM or PowerPC processors.
