The problem was that ubuntu server edition requires pae and my old
pentium-m
laptop doesn't support them.  And my problem was that loading another
kernel during the install isn't intuitive:)  Lesson learned though. 
The reinstalling was just me trying to figure out how to load the
generic kernel in addition to the server kernel.
