Thanks 4mula1. I had not overwritten the original convert.conf but put the edits in custom-convert.conf as suggested. However, there seems to be several variations of the scripts for calling mplayer, and I do not have sufficient knowledge to understand what is the correct one - is there a help file explaining the syntax for the .conf file? I do not have the binaries for faad2 or lame on my EeePC - I could only find source code for faad2 on the web and do not presently know how to compile it. However, I have mplayer and Music Manager 1.4.3 which is also Amarok and uses the xine engine to play .m4a files, so presumably lurking in there are the needed codecs and converters. If you can guide me through this minefield of 'too much information' I would be grateful, thanks, Tony
