Check whether the Linux on eeePC supports /dev/fd/4 - a lot of minimal Linux implementations (e./g. on NAS) removes full support for /dev/fd except for /dev/fd/0 1 and 2. It is /dev/fd/4 which is used when doing ">4" in the command line.
