I have been using a debian sid since befoore woody became stable! Why would you want to auto-update at all? Always manually check the updates before you apply. Even then my experience is that even sid is rarely broken.
Lenny seems pretty stable to me I have several lenny boxes running in production. Admittedly these machine have a very limited set of applications running.
