I just finished installing Ubuntu 8.10 for a purpose built XBMC HTPC. The installation is minimal, designed to boot straight up to XBMC, which is does. FWIW, I used this tutorial here: http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=HOW-TO:_Install_XBMC_for_Linux_on_Ubuntu_8.10_(Intrepid)_step-by-step
At the same time I am thinking it would be nice to be able to use that same box to run SqueezeCenter instead of on my Windows PC (thus I could turn off my PC more often). My first question is whether or not this installation is capable (suitable?) for SC? My next question is if it IS OK, then where am I going wrong in the installation? I followed the wiki here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/DebianPackage but only got as far as the second step. I edited my sources.list file but when I tried to run apt-get update I got this error: E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the list directory I'm a linux novice to be sure.
