Installed Squeezeplay 7.4 r5302M last night on a ubuntu 8.10 amd64
laptop and it does indeed have some issues. I will check the source out
and investigate further but for the moment it can be made to run using
the following procedure:

1. create a file in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ with any name and containing the
line
Code:
--------------------
    /opt/squeezeplay/lib
--------------------
 - this will save having to issue the ldconfig command repeatedly.
Alternatively copy the squeezeplay libs to one of the trusted
directories /lib/ or /usr/lib/.

2. launch using
Code:
--------------------
    sudo /opt/squeezeplay/bin/jive
--------------------
 - less than satisfactory but if not run as root, gmon.out errors due to
a permissions issue and jive cannot open a console terminal.

Note this is not a vanilla install but one running Compiz and numerous
other hacks. I am not seeing the 'no available video device' error that
others are experiencing so launching as root may not help those. However
if you're getting a 'Unable to open a console terminal' message it
should.

This was intended to be a quick lashup to stream the same audio to 2
different rooms for a dinner party so I spent just enough time on it to
get it going (whilst also preparing the food !).......more as I find
it.
