Unfortunately the "Places" browser interface (called nautilus) doesn't automatically make files visible to the rest of the OS. It's a long-standing annoyance of mine that it doesn't use something like FUSE to make files visible.
What you will want to do to make your NAS system-wide visible is to "mount" the network filesystem. Which NAS do you have?
