Hi,

I've recently moved to Ubuntu 9.04 Server from a Windows server and I'm
having some problems with transcoding. I don't know whether it started
when I installed the previous 7.3.x version or when I upgraded to 7.4.

There is a directory installed with Squeezeboxserver
(/usr/share/squeezeboxserver/Bin/i386-linux) which seems to have a
number of codecs in it, including faad and flac. A lot of messing around
has got me to the point where I can see that they are 32-bit binaries.
As I have a 64-bit OS, they don't seem to want to execute (the OS just
says it can't find the file, rather than a helpful message about the
unsupported binary format). It is an x86 machine, incidentally.

My first question is, does anybody know why I've got 32-bit binaries?
Is this a problem with the 7.4 package, is it expected and they should
work anyway (and if so, why don't they?) and is there anything I can do
to remedy the situation? I'm a bit surprised that a search through the
forums hasn't turned up anyone else with this problem: I can't believe
my system is particularly rare.

I've tried installing both faad and flac and moving the bins to the
Squeezeboxserver binaries folder. This solves the problem of not being
able to execute the software (at least the debug file not found message
has gone away), but I still don't get any sound. The aac file I'm trying
to play looks like it's working for a couple of seconds and then the
player goes back to "stop", which is what's been happening all along.

Just for info: the file plays fine in Foobar2000, iPlayer AAC streams
don't work either and as far as I know, everything outside of
transcoding works fine (well, other than the alarm clock, favourites and
iPlayer streams, but I believe that's a known problem...). Debug logs
show that an attempt is made to transcode the file from AAC to FLAC,
which is the route I'm trying to get to work. All my other music is
FLAC.

The only thing I've done which may have thrown things slightly is not
remove the old 7.3.x (7.3.3? - latest one anyway) install before moving
to 7.4. The 7.4 install said it was removing the old version, but a lot
of it still seems to exist (for example, there's still an init.d
Squeezecenter script).

Can anyone offer any advice?
