With Ubuntu, one of the first things people should do is install the
restricted extras. It does include important multimedia codecs. I have
never had an issue playing any format provided I install the restricted
extras right away. I think the Ubuntu installation process should tell
users that the vast majority of them want to go install restricted
extras.
