Difficult to see exactly from here. But if you're using a GUI like
Gnome, I would advise to look at the power management settings.
That's not perfect for a multi-purpose machine, but I think the best
you can do is have the machine stay awake all the time (no PM) and ask
the Server Power Control plugin to sleep the machine when it feels the
SB system is not used anymore.

Additionally, you can have "hooks" that block Server Power Control from
shutting down the machine when you are logged into the computer. You
have to explicitly log out for the machine to go to sleep some time,
but that's better than having the plugin shutdown the laptop when
you're doing some office work...
The hook feature is standard for OS X, but I've tested its equivalent
with Gnome and XDM (should cover KDM too I think). You can search the
Server Power Control thread in the 1/3 party plugins subforum, if
you're interested.
