Thank you for your quick help. Unfortunately, this is way above my head. I tried creating a udev rule but it didn't seem to do anything different. Then I found some information about making sure the drive is being unmounted properly before going into suspend mode by using a file under /etc/acpi and adding an unmount command that is supposed to run before going into suspend mode. But I wasn't sure how to implement that either.
Anyway, any other, "simple" solutions based on the unmount logic or any other way?
