Problem apparently solved. (This one at lesast.) Somehow in the transition the file at /etc/network/interfaces was screwed up. There was no lo interface and mysqld woudn't start. Adding the lines auto lo iface lo inet loopback appears to have fixed the problem... somehow. That's the result of a solid 12 hours of googling.
