To play MMS you need server side WMA decoding when you disable native Windows Media. On Windows this support is included. For Linux you need to add a 3rd party WMA decoder. You can do this with the PlayWMA plugin and install the nogui version of mplayer.
Due to mplayer buffering there is usually a 5-15 delay in starting to play streams compared to native SB player.
