Cinamon was a good desktop thankyou, solid advice.

Mint13 with Cinamon was installed works good

I only have some strang grub problems in that the installer won't find
my win7 os and all attemps to fix it breakes the windows boot loader and
make me reformat all my drives.
Luckily the bios on my new mobo have a boot facility where you can boot
from different locations without changing options or reboot .

But in general happy with my new PC Mint13 recognised all hardware .

I'm in the process of imaging all my drives and create rescue disc so
that I dare to experiment some more with the bootloader ;)
