Thanks Triode, this is absolutely fantastic after months of trouble getting squeezeplay working, this is the perfect match with the raspberry pi!
I compiled it on raspbian armhf and works perfectly! I apt-get installed the following libraries in order for me to compile squeezelite on latest Raspbian.
