What does -d output=debug show when you try to play a 88.2k stream?? 
The problem with the server logic for this is that it assumes all rates
are supported by the player upto the max rate.  You could start the
device with a -r parameter of 48000, but this would avoid it playing
natively at 96k.  However squeezelite should try to open the device at
the desired rate and fallback to resampling within alsa if this is not
possible.
