Thanks for the tips. I'm pretty sure I know what is going on now and
it's not software drop outs. My Buffalo DAC was set up in combination
with my Rendu Network Player that is has optimized hardware signal paths
for i2s and DSD and a very high quality power supply. As such the
Buffalo's DAC chip was configured with a narrow signal input bandwidth.
The hardware (USB converter and corresponding LVDS output board) that
I'm using for these tests is just wired together to work and uses a
cheap switching power supply. The jitter produced by this combination
exceeds the input bandwidth of the DAC and the result is the dropouts
I'm hearing. The higher the sample rate the more drop outs. The DSD
converted file is streaming at 176.4 and as such is not having issues.
That said I'll switch to another DAC for testing going forward:)
