The messages are cryptic and not very clear but I managed to find the issue anyhow when taking a closer look this evening... Seems like depending on the age of the Ubuntu install, the ia32-libs may go sour due to release upgrades. Consequently the codec tools installed with the LMS stopped working. Not sure why it continued working on SB3 but fixed by installing the 64 bits codecs manually.
