Yeah, when I did the "empeg" I saw that it uses one 32 bit word for the 32 pixels vertically, so pixels are only 1 or 0. I remember some bit setting to tell the server to do server-side scrolling; I actually use that on the empeg as I never got around to doing it on the client. Maybe I'll just do that for now to get the functionality back.
