Hi, I did exactly what you are looking for using Voyage Linux (without MPD) and Squeezelite on a old pentium 4 notebook.
Very easy to configure and sound perfectly, in my opinion better than Jriver and Foobar on the same hardware in Windows. Did the same also with an Alice board, similar results in functionality but the sound was non the same.
