So I gave up with 48k playing on my SB3.
I added the following to custom-convert.conf to convert everything to
44.1 k

and yet when I play a 24/96 file...
# ps ax | grep sox
0:01 /usr/share/squeezeboxserver/Bin/i386-linux/sox -q -t wav - -t flac
-C 0 -r 48000 -
Sorry, but it is *really* bugging me that this is not working as it
should.
