OK, got it. When people are buying an off-the-shelf Western Dig Elements (or whatever it is called) external USB drive, it comes pre-partitioned and FAT32 formatted. I suppose I was thinking that you plug it into the OS for the first time and it gets formatted, but of course, it is pre-formatted.
