That is strange, I have an Edimax dongle and an Realtek both are working
fine.
So we will have to look deeper, could it be a timing issue.
Could you provide the following info, after you have booted and not
connected:

Also if you have a monitor connected to the raspberry when booting, what
is it saying when wifi is starting up?
