Hi I have seen this a few times also during development of piCorePlayer,
it is caused because it is running out of space on the card, and
therefore the last file is not untarred. This file is mydata.gz, which
contain a copy of most of the changes including the file which states
the version number.

my experience is that if I do a prober format of the card using
something like
http://download.cnet.com/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool/3000-2094_4-10974082.html
which will format the whole card and not only the fat partition, then it
is working.
