The typical "ssid switch off" only turns off one of the several ways the
ssid is broadcasted anyway , a person with the rigth software finds it
in seconds. and it's actually incompatible with many devices , so don't
.

If you want to be reasonably safe use WPA AES and a really strong
password ,long and random  ( and not the default that came with the
router if it was delivered that way ) dont use WEP it's cracked years
ago.

While at it another bad idea is mac adress filtering , you often forget
that you ever did it and they are easily spoofed anyway .
