I think the advantage is debatable - its only worthwhile if the dac has a hardware volume which is actually implemented in the device driver (otherwise software volume moves from squeezelite to somewhere in alsa and I can vouch for it less!) One of the motivations (the main motivation) though was to allow squeezelite to work on devices which have default alsa volume controls at mute or low volume levels.
