Yes -U should set the alsa control to max and then do the same as before
applying gain internally in squeezelite to adjust the samples sent to
alsa.

I'm not sure about using both together as the -V option is only setting
the alsa volume to the value set by LMS.  So as soon as the slimproto
connection to LMS is established it would then change the alsa volume to
the setting LMS sends even if it set it to 100% at startup. Hence using
both is going to perform as if only -V us used.  Note that it is not
telling LMS to change its view of the volume, just changing how it
processes the value sent by LMS.
