The search for A killer's Dream stopped my server, boom rebuffered etc,
but the next version of LMS handled the query without stopping. Too late
then to withdraw the comment. Its still slow, but certainly not a show
stopper.

What I didn't know previously is that more search term actually can slow down the search. "a killer's dream" is considered four terms. If you used "killer dream" only, that would be faster.

In particular popular terms, or even worse, sub-terms, can kill those queries. The exact "on the other side of the moon" would be many times slower than "other side moon", as "on" and "the" are pretty generic in larger collections. I must admit that I'm not sure yet how to address this the best way. I'm going to add a filter to not use sub-string searches for single characters. You'll need at least two characters to search for sub-strings. This at least wouldn't kill the killer's dream ;-).
